Eastern Yamuna Canal offtakes from Tajewala Head situated on Yamnuna river at U.P.-Haryana Border. This canal is the oldest irrigation system dated back to Mogul era. Exact period of construction of this canal is not known, originally it was called the Doab Canal. Later the construction of present Eastern Yamuna Canal was taken up by the Britishers and the proposed work were completed on 3rd January, 1830. Since then, so many alterations, additions, upgradations have taken place to this  canal system. It have now become the life line of Western districts of U.P. and especially the Muzaffarnagar District. This canal system is the single biggest factor in the prosperity of Western part of the district.  Total length of canal of this system is 417.057 Kms. in the District.     Lower Division, Eastern Yamuna Canal, has been assigned to maintain and run the Eastern Yamuna Canal System in the District. This canal system is one of the oldest irrigation system. Most of the irrigation works are very old and have lost their life. Even then the department is trying tooth and nail to provide irrigation facilities to the farmers at the cheapest rate. Average irrigation for the last five year is 39,318 hectares which is 74% of the proposed irrigation. Beside providing irrigation facilities the farmers. This Division also maintains 281.13 Km. drains in this district. There drains are being maintained as per availability of funds.
