        U.P. Jal Nigam has been formed in the year 1975 by converting the L.S.G.E.D. into a Nigam. The Government of U.P. has assigned the work of Water Supply and Sewerage in the urban and rural areas of State. It also executes the works pertaining to removal of pollution of major rivers like Ganga, Yamuna and Gomti. It has also developed its commercial wing, which is getting various type of civil construction works in U.P., and outside on competitive basis. The principal objective of the department is to provide safe and potable drinking water to the inhabitants of the State settled in urban as well as in the rural areas.

HEAD OF DEPARTMENT:At State level Managing Director is the Head of Department. At local level Executive Engineer is the incharge of the Division, assisted by 5 assistant engineers and 14 junior engineers.

(A) BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECTS/SCHEMES:

    (i) In Urban Areas:        As per Government policies inhabitants of towns has provide potable drinking water through pipe line system. Accordingly all the 20 towns in the district including district head quarter has already been covered by piped water supply system.

        Due to rapid increase in population and shortage of power supply, in most of the towns, inhabitants are getting water less than standard norms. In addition to piped water supply 880 nos. India Mark-II hand pumps has also been installed to give relief to the inhabitants of towns.

        Most of the towns required reorganization of water supply system on account of unprecedented increase in population/extension of colonies. So major works required  are laying of pipe lines in newly developed colonies and increase in storage capacity in the towns.

        All the already executed schemes in the towns has been handed-over to local bodies for regular maintenance and upkeep.

    (ii) In Rural Areas:        As per Government policies rural population is also provided potable drinking water from India Mark-II hand pumps. In views of that out of 913 rural habitation 626 habitations has already been saturated by installing 12564 India Mark -II hand pumps. Remaining 287 habitations will be saturated this year by installing 839 new India Mark-II hand pumps. All the executed hand pumps has been handed over to Gram Sabha for maintenance as per new Panchayat Raj System.

        Apart from installation of Indian Mark-II hand pumps. In rural area Government of India has stressed on the quality of water,. In views of that work of testing of water samples of hand pumps in rural area is in under progress. Till now water of one village Babri has been found unsatisfactory. Hence piped water supply scheme for Babri village is in progress under quality problem village programme of Government of India.

        There are six piped water supply schemes in rural area which are being maintained by Jal Nigam. These schemes were executed under district plan on public demand. Construction of scheme for one village Muzhera Sadat is in progress under district plan.

        All the works pertaining to water supply in rural areas are under "Rajiv Gandhi Technology Mission".

OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT

        The main objective of all the above said schemes and projects is to provide safe and potable drinking water to the inhabitants of the district as per norms fixed by Government of India as well as State Government.

(C) PROCEDURE (HOW IT IS BEING IMPLEMENTED):

(i)    The schemes of towns having population more than 20000 are being approved and f9inanced by State Government.

(II)    The schemes of towns having population below 20000 are being approved and financed by Central Government under accelerated urban water supply programme.

(iii)    The installation of India Mark-II hand pumps and pipe line schemes in rural areas are being approved and financed by district plan of State Government under Minimum Needs Programme as well as by Central Government under accelerated rural water supply programme.
